Prof. Tony Miles

Director, Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics
University of Bath
United Kingdom

Biography

Tony Miles was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town where he graduated with a BSc(Eng) in Mechanical Engineering in 1969 and an MSc(Eng) in 1972. He subsequently joined the staff as a Lecturer in 1972 becoming a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1978. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath in 1986 as a Lecturer in Design and was promoted to a Senior Lectureship in 1992, a Readership in 1998 and a Personal Chair in Dec 2000. He was appointed Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in April 2011. He is Director of the Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics which has a specific focus on pre-clinical assessment and validation of orthopaedic devices and surgical procedures spanning joint replacement, fracture fixation, bone augmentation and biomaterials. Professor Miles has extensive experience in biomechanics in relation to total joint replacement, specifically relating to issues of kinematics, implant fixation, loading and simulation. He has co-authored over 95 refereed journal papers and over 225 conference papers and regularly lectures on courses to orthopaedic surgeons.

Research Interest

Tony Miles research is in the fields of Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Biomaterials. His research is primarily focused on the development of experimental research tools for evaluating the performance of orthopaedic implants used in total joint replacement and fracture treatment. He has also extensive experience in various aspects of fixation of orthopaedic implants. He has also been involved in the development of biomaterials for augmentation and/or replacement of bone stock associated with impaction grafting used in revision total joint replacement and injectable biomaterials used in bone screw augmentation and vertebral body fractures. He has a developing interest in kinematics of the natural and total knee replacements.
